Steve...taking in the grandeur! I think Steve was pretty surprised when he opened his birthday card Sunday to see a note inside that said we were heading to the Grand Canyon the next day on the Grand Canyon Railway! What a wonderful day we had. We left Williams at 9:30 AM after a brief shoot up at the little western town there by the train. The train ride was 2 hours each way...the scenery was beautiful but paled compared to Her Majesty, The Grand Canyon. The weather was in the mid 70's and not a cloud in the sky. We walked a good share of the south rim. Steve is going to actually calculate the mileage! On the train ride home, we spotted a small herd of elk! I have posted a couple of pictures from our day there. Steve was a good sport, carrying around Sparkles all day in the backpack. She was in there with her head sticking out so she could at least breathe.....

As I was sitting here, deciding how I wanted to write about the wind we have been experiencing the last couple of days, I looked at The Peaks (and not my first look for the day), only to discover that a cloud that had covered the top of the mountain, has left snow! Nothing down in the valley where we live but the top third of The Peaks have received yet another dusting of snow. It's beautiful.
Now....back to the wind...We have had sustained 36 MPH wind for a couple of days now...and gusts in the 40-60 MPH range. Our rental house sounds alive with the roar of the wind as it comes down the chimney! Sitting and watching the clouds "fly by", I thought "this looks like time-lapsed photography but it's REAL TIME." Literally, it took less than 3 minutes for a cloud to go from one end to the other of the 5 foot window I was looking through. The one windchime we put up on the front porch is so tangled I'm not sure it will ever be the same but it's untangled itself before so maybe it will happen again. Speaking of windchimes...I was saddened by the news that Paolo Soleri died last week. He was 93 years old and is well known for his futuristic community called Arcosanti, located on the I 17 north of Phoenix. They cast and sell wind chimes or wind bells at Arcosanti. It's an awesome place and well worth the few miles on a dirt road off the freeway to see al the "bells". We have three of them and are looking forward to adding to our collection. Here is a link, if you are interested in the bells. http://www.cosanti.com/ Click on SHOP and then click on Soleri Wind Bells On Line. There are many to pick from. If you look hard, you can see the start of the hail accumulating on the street. Well, today we had a variety of weather. Wind, wind, and more wind. Up to 68 miles per hour according to the weather report tonight! It was unbelievable. But what interesting about it was the hail and snow it was pushing around! It was actually hitting you sideways. The hail was a little bigger than the size of peas. It was bouncing all over the place. Then there was snow mixed in with it. And then there was just snow. Amazing when you know that yesterday, it was 70, sunny and beautiful. I never imagined the weather could change that much in just one day. Oh, and it supposed to snow tonight, too. Everything is white again after being clear for about 2-3 weeks. But those stars are still as amazing as ever! |
